Restructuring Educational
Facilities in Leon County (FL) School District
The
UW Center for Architecture and Education
asked Emily Millet and Jim Croteau to begin a dialog about restructuring school
facilities to meet the needs of school populations in rapidly changing circumstances.
Their article includes a selection of documents outlining policy issues that
schools and districts must include in the planning process.
In a related story, the Seattle Times recently featured an article on
the design of River Ridge High School: State of the art school design
attempts to enhance learning, not just house it.
The web version does not include photographs and
sidebars which added to the printed story-- interested readers may wish
to
contact the newspaper or visit a library to read the original. (Seattle
Times, Wednesday, May 29, 1996, pp. A1 and A11.)
Seven Characteristics of Highly
Effective Adult Learning Programs
We opened our Lifelong Learning
floor this month with an article by New Horizons Advisory Council member Dorothy
Billington. In an age of scarce resources and rapid change, her research shows
that there are some effective ways to structure adult learning programs. She
identifies the factors that best facilitate adult growth and development in
adult learning environments.
Recreating Schools for All Children
Veteran principal John Morefield outlines twelve characteristics of schools
that work for all children. Morefield has traveled extensively researching
schools and programs that work. He bases his thesis on his work with students
and parents at his own school, on Effective Schools research and on the research
of James Comer, Hank Levin, Bob Slavin and others. His article opens a Building
floor devoted to information about Restructuring Education. He is Principal
of Hawthorne Elementary School in Seattle, Washington and on several advisory
boards, including that of Powerful Schools and New Horizons for Learning.
His article opens the Restructuring Education floor.

inspiring story opens a new Building floor focused on Multicultural Education.
7 Principles of Learning: Challenging Fundamental
Assumptions
The Institute for Research on Learning has contributed a thought provoking
piece for the 21st Century Learning Initative. The IRL's research suggests
that learning is inseparable from engagement in the world, and intellect is
inseparable from experience. Visit the 21st Century
Learning Initiative office for more articles about the development of
learning communities in a changing world.
