*Article: Dee Dickinson Interviews Robert Sylwester
- Dee Dickinson interviews Dr. Robert Sylwester from the University of Oregon, one of the foremost synthesizers of brain research applied to education, on how he came to be interested in brain theory. A Reading List accompanies the article.

* Article: Implications of New Media for K-12 Education Chris Dede
- Last fall George Mason University Professor Chris Dede was invited to testify before the US House of Representatives at a joint hearing on Educational Technology in the 21st Century. Dr. Dede provided us with a transcript of his testimony calling for support of the introduction of new ways of teaching and learning that are now possible with new computers and technological tools. He also sent an outline of some of the policy issues facing innovative educators and invited us to visit the website for his exciting research project. He and a team of scientists and researchers are studying the use of Virtual Reality technologies in the teaching of science. The SpaceScience site contains several papers outlining their research findings.

VR in the Schools is a newsletter published on the web by The Virtual Reality and Education Laboratory at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. Read first person accounts by teachers who are using VR to enhance learning. This copy of the newsletter is being distributed at a database of articles on media literacy at the University of Oregon.

*Article: The Character Education Manifesto Center for the Advancement of Ethics and Character
- "True character education is the hinge upon which academic excellence, personal achievement, and true citizenship depend. It calls forth the very best from school students, faculty, staff, and parents." The Center for the Advancement of Ethics and Character (CAEC) at Boston University is the first center on ethics and character in the country to focus on the education of teachers, providing hundreds of present and future teachers with opportunities and resources for helping students understand and respect humanity's highest moral ideals and traditions of civility. The CAEC's Manifesto is a call for reform at a most fundamental level; it is accompanied by an outstanding list of resources and a description of their mission and programs.

* Announcement: Fall Conference: Assessing Learning II: Revitalizing Instruction Through Assessment
- Assessing Learning II was a great success. Teachers, administrators, school board members, and parents gathered to learn how quality assessment strategies are vital to good instruction. The conference was held September 26-28, 1996 at Shoreline Center in North Seattle.

- The Book List is a regular feature on the Observation Deck. In this issue we offer a few good books about leadership compiled by Dee Dickinson.
