Most learning systems apply external motivation through grades, rankings, teacher direction, and standardized tests. The Happy Child suggests that a self-motivated child who is interdependent within a community can develop the full human potential to live a creative and fulfilling life. Harrison focuses on the integration of the whole child, the learning environment, and the non-coercive spirit of curiosity-driven education.
The book concludes with a description of learning communities where life, work, play, and education are integrated. Harrison notes that in such a community there is no distinction between learning and living. He notes that "Our children are simply profound reminders that changing the heart of education means opening our own hearts, not just to our children, but to each other." Author Steven Harrison is founder of All Together Now International, a charitable organization that provides aid to street children and the destitute in Nepal. He is also a founder of The Living School, a learning community in Boulder, Colorado, where he lives.
