Victory in Our Schools:We CAN Give Our Children Excellent Public Education
by John Stanford
Bantam Books, 1999
ISBN 0-553-37974-7

John Stanford, highly respected and inspiring Superintendent of Seattle Public Schools, gained national recognition for his work in bringing about bold, positive changes in Seattle's educational community. He has left an invaluable legacy in the form of his book Victory in Our Schools, published posthumously this fall.

The book paints a graphic, detailed picture of the problems and challenges of a large, urban system, and envisions what all public schools could become. Stanford describes, step by step, the road that he, his staff, teachers, administrators, and students traveled together during the dramatic three years of his leadership. He rallied the energy, resources, and enthusiastic support of the entire community, with the help of the Alliance for Education and the hundreds of organizations and corporations that were involved.

Victory in Our Schools offers powerful strategies that can be used by all school districts as they experience the greatest changes in history. In his "Check Lists for Change," Stanford lists essential principles to be considered by teachers, principals, superintendents, parents whole schools community service organizations, businesses, religious organizations, ethnic organizations, the media, arts organizations, and retired people as they work together to help all children to become successful at learning.

It is not difficult to imagine what a wonderful world it would be if Stanford's principles were applied in every community, beginning with solid commitment to raising the academic achievement of all children.
