Start Planning Online Projects and Networking
Global School Net's School Projects
website offers links to projects ranging from simple e-mail classroom-to-classroom
connections to live videoconferencing. There's something here for every level
of connectivity. Some projects have been going for several years.
The ELTEC Project: Community Networking
We recently attended a planning meeting for an electronic learning project sponsored
by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction here in Washington State.
Sheryl Burgstahler and Catherine Swift of the University of Washington shared
websites and links that will be of interest to anyone using electronic technologies
to teach and build learning communities. For more reading about using electronic
technologies in schools try this link Teaching with Electronic Technology.
Take a look at the ELTEC project.
Memes: Links to Thought-Provoking Websites
A hot topic in the Internet community has been the spread and mutation of ideas
online. Some people have used the metaphor of a virus to describe the phenomenon,
others float the idea of a meme, a self-replicating piece of information that
transforms the receiver and that seems to take on a life of its own.
Some Links to Debate About The Internet:
Is It Really Dangerous for Children?
The debate about acceptable use of the Internet has generated some interesting
articles by veteran internet users. Articles posted on the Integrating
Technology Schools Home Page at the University of New Mexico debate the validity
of assertions that Internet is a dangerous place for children. Related sites include
those on memes (see above) and the IRTF Survey
Working Group, Internet demographers who have set up a website to serve as a
clearinghouse for credible statistics about the Net and its users. The Computer-Mediated Communication
Magazine's August issue features a number of related articles.
The current issue of Wired Magazine features an article about the inventor
of the DNA computer. This scientist-mathematician has some interesting things
to say about the relationship of science and mathematics. The links at the end
of our review will take you to math and problem-solving websites.
