New Horizons for Learning Online Journal
Vol. IX No. 4, Fall 2003

From the Editor
Dee Dickinson

"Without shared dreams, organizations falter and perish. Individuals, groups, and organizations all need their own stories."
-- From Leading With Soul by Lee Bolman and Terrence Deal.

At the beginning of another school year we have gathered for you some both practical and inspirational thoughts about leadership-- primarily distributed leadership on the part of school administrators, teachers, students, and other members of the community. It is these leaders who can work collaboratively and make it possible to create nurturing and supportive environments in which all students can learn.

We would like to thank Dr. Steve Fink, co-director of the Center for Educational Leadership at the University of Washington, and his colleagues at the center and at Panasonic for their significant contributions to this issue. We also thank the outstanding school administrators, teachers, and students who have shared their wisdom and expertise in their articles.

In the coming year, the following topics will be the focus of future online Journals:

We invite you to send your suggestions and proposed articles for these issues to building@newhorizons.org.

You may also access exceptional archived issues from last school year on Learning Through the Arts, Learning Through Technology, Multicultural Education, and Environmental Education and Project-Based Learning.

We are delighted to announce a new addition to our staff! Janet Hayakawa, formerly ATLAS Site Developer, has joined us as Executive Director of New Horizons for Learning.

As always, we are anxious to hear from you and hope you will participate in our first Autumn Harvest Campaign so we can continue to make our online resources freely available to all!
