From the Observation Deck

by Dee Dickinson

In the late seventies there was a dramatic explosion of new research from the neurosciences, cognitive sciences, studies in human development, and analysis of individual differences in personality, behavior, and learning. Clearly there were major implications for education that led to our founding of New Horizons for Learning in 1980. Building on this early research, during the next two decades, educational researchers and practitioners have made major breakthroughs in developing effective teaching and learning strategies.

At the present time, there is a similar explosion of new research coming directly from applying these teaching and learning strategies in schools and adult training programs. There is now solid research to back up the most effective educational practices that result in improved academic achievement.

It is certain that these strategies will be most effective when they are applied in positive, supportive environments where there is recognition of the emotional, social and physical needs of students and where individual strengths are recognized, nurtured, and developed.

We have posted some of the primary new resources in our recommended reading lists in our previous online Journal and the current one. These are also posted in our newly updated Tool Room, where we describe the strategies that have been proved to be the most effective.

We would welcome your feedback as we continue to build the Tool Room as an effective resource for teachers and students focusing on improved academic achievement and striving to meet new academic standards.
