It's Up to Us
by John Graham
Giraffe Project, 1999

John Graham is Executive Director of The Giraffe Project, an organization dedicated to recognizing and giving visibility to those who "stick our their necks for the common good."  Its Up to Us is not only a collection of amazing, true stories about everyday heroes, but also helps the reader learn how to make the world better for everyone. Basically, it's a coaching manual on how to live life well, and is especially important for adolescents who are just beginning to discover who they are and imagine who they can become.

We believe that every middle school and high school should make this book available and encourage students to read it. Counselors, teachers, coaches, mentors and tutors, and parents need to read and use this book! It combines applied learning active citizenship, character education, social and emotional learning, prevention, and service learning all of which are essential in successful secondary school programs. Graham writes, "Don't back away from letting your life be as important as it needs to be as full of meaning, vision, and joy as you can make it."
