Positive Parenting from A to Z
by Karen Renshaw Joslin
Fawcett Columbine, 1994
ISBN: 0-449-90780-5Positive Parenting is a handbook for parents that should be kept close at hand. In an easy to use format with topics listed alphabetically, the author describes hundreds of challenges that all parents face, describing the issue itself, suggestions about what to say and do, prevention tips, and suggested readings. The book opens with a clear, concise introduction to basic principles including understanding your child's need to belong, fostering mutual respect, loving and accepting unconditionally, taking care of yourself, and modeling important skills such as communication, emotional self-control, self-discipline, and using good judgment and making good choices.
Joslin introduces ten basic tools for positive parenting that bear reading several times: setting limits, time out and cooling off, when to keep a poker face, time for teaching, action with few words, offering choices, planning for special times, encouragement, family meetings, and problem-solving strategies. We recommend this book not only for parents, but believe that many teachers will wish to use it themselves and refer parents to it.
