Birth of the Chaordic Age
by Dee Hock
Berrett-Koehler, 1999
ISBN:  1576750744

Dee Hock, founder and CEO of Visa International, has written a remarkable book about living in complex times. His book is written in an innovative and often poetic way that combines deep, humane, philosophy with the suspenseful story of how he created Visa. He reveals insights into his own successful style of leadership and his ability to work in often chaotic situations, bringing order into complexity by developing new concepts of organizational change.  Although the book describes his work in the business world, there are many apt comparisons to the world of education with its ongoing "chaordic""challenges. This is a book to read, reread, mark up, and study! Hock writes, "We are at that very point in time when a 400-year-old age is dying and another is struggling to be born, a shifting of culture, science, society, and situations enormously greater than the world has ever experienced. Ahead, the possibility of regeneration of individuality, liberty, community and ethics such as the world has never known, and a harmony with nature, with one another and with the divine intelligence such as the world has always dreamed."
