Education on the Edge of Possibility
by Renate Nummela Caine and Geoffrey Caine
Association for Supervision & Curriculum Development, April 1997
ISBN: 0871202824
Education on the Edge of Possibility is a thought-provoking, inspiring, and extremely useful new book by Renate and Geoffrey Caine. Taking off from their last book, Making Connections, this is the story of what happened when they took their theory of brain-based learning and attempted to implement it in two schools.
The book describes the process of change -- including the struggles, the successes, and also the failures -- that they and the teachers experienced. In the "process groups" they formed, teachers were supported in questioning their deepest assumptions about learning and teaching, changing their mental models, and as a result changing what they did in the classroom. The authors note that "changing our thinking is the first thing we have to do both individually and collectively because without that change we cannot possibly change what we do on a day to day basis. Regardless of what new method or latest technique is attempted, the mind/brain will always choose to reduce such practices to fit entrenched assumptions and beliefs." This is a book about understanding how systemic change in education takes place, along with important insights and practical strategies that make it possible.
