A Celebration of Neurons: An Educator's Guide to the Human Brain
by Robert Sylwester
Zephyr Press, 1995
ISBN: 0-87120-243-3
Sylwester is the master of the metaphor. In about 150 pages, he takes the complex, technical concepts of brain chemistry and functioning and gives them to the educator in simple English. Each chapter covers an aspect of the human brain, summarizes recent research, and explains the importance of this information for the classroom, based on the structure and biochemistry of the brain.
This book gives us the solid, brain-based evidence we need to explain why and how we should include emotions in the classroom, find more ways for students to work cooperatively, merge technology with more traditional tools, teach thematic and integrative units, and provide drug education from a biochemical, rather than a moral, approach.
