Brain Matters: Translating Research into Classroom Practice
by Patricia Wolfe
ASCD, 2001
ISBN: 0-87120-517-3

Patricia Wolfe is not a neuroscientist nor a researcher, but rather a master teacher with a profound interest in the workings of the human brain and relevance to classroom instruction and learning. For the last twenty years she has learned from researchers in the field and from the ongoing explosion of new research and publications about the brain/mind system.

As a teacher, she joins and empathizes with other teachers who wonder about such questions as "Why do some students learn so quickly and others have such a difficult time figuring out the process? How can students sit through an excellent lesson on Monday, and on Tuesday act as if they have never heard the information before? Why are some seemingly simple concepts so difficult for some students to grasp while others have no trouble with them? What causes attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or autism, and how can we help students with these and other disorders?"

The book attempts to give clues to possible answers to such questions and to offer some practical applications of brain research. It is divided into three parts. Part 1 is a mini-textbook on brain-imaging techniques and the anatomy and physiology of the brain. Part 2 introduces a model of how the brain processes information and explores some of the implications of this process for classroom practice. Part 3 presents examples of teaching strategies that match how the brain learns best through projects, simulations, visuals, music, writing, and mnemonics.

The book has practical hints for "synapse strengtheners," or helpful learning tools and strategies, a useful glossary, and abundant illustrations and explanations in "non-researchese."
