Academic Success Strategies for Adolescents with Learning Disabilities and ADHD
by Esther Minskoff and David Allsopp
Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co., 2002
ISBN: 1557666253

The authors are Esther Minskoff, a pioneer in the field of learning disabilities and Professor of Special Education at James Madison University, and David Allsopp, advocate of research-based and best educational practices and Associate Professor of Special Education at the University of Southern Florida. Building on their extensive research and practice, they have written a powerful and practical guide for helping challenged adolescent learners. Their book is based on sound basic philosophy underpinning the field of learning disabilities, is anchored to the latest research, issues, trends in education, and makes use of the most current technology. The related Learning Toolbox website is at http://coe.jmu.edu/learning toolbox.

The authors describe successful approaches to evaluating and helping "Active Learners" through cognitive learning strategies and explicit instruction, and show how to implement their Active Learner Approach. The book includes strategies in organization, test-taking, study skills, note-taking, reading, writing, mathematics, and advanced thinking. Throughout the book a five-step model helps teachers introduce the strategies to students, model the steps of the strategies for them, give students guided practice and independent practice, and help students generalize the strategies to other subjects and settings. This book is an invaluable resource not only for special education teachers, but also for all middle school and high school teachers in inclusive classrooms.
