Autism Spectrum Disorders from A to Z: Assessment, Diagnosis, and More
by Barbara Doyle and Emily Doyle Iland
Future Horizons, 2004
ISBN: 1-932565-07-8

For parents, teachers, and consultants who work with children who have Autism Spectrum Disorders, (ASD), this is a comprehensive, long sought-after reference book and guide to help these children to live fuller lives. Author Barbara Doyle is a special education professional with 32 years of experience in developmental disability services. Co-author Emily Doyle Iland is Barbara's sister and mother to a son with ASD. She advocates for professionals, families, and children sharing her knowledge and first-hand experiences.

The book describes these disorders, discusses considerations in their diagnosis, describes appropriate methods of assessment and diagnosis and how to support the family of those with this disorder, and discusses possible causes and treatments. It is written with compassion and deep concern for offering the best possible future for those with ASD, and it includes numerous anecdotes based on the personal experiences of the authors.

Barbara Doyle writes, "Hundreds of families have allowed me to assist them in the process of negotiating the maze of diagnoses, treatment and educational planning. Over the years a "core" set of skills has crystallized--skills staff and families need to learn if they're to achieve greater success for the individuals they support. In this book, my sister Emily and I will share what we have learned and hope you will use it with your own creativity, ingenuity, and love."
