The Normal One: Life With a Difficult or Damaged Sibling
by Jeanne Safer
Bantam Dell, 2003
ISBN: 0385337566

In this unique book, noted psychotherapist Dr. Jeanne Safer examines the experiences of adults who grew up with a "difficult" sibling, and illuminates the misunderstood and often taboo feelings of the normal child. Beginning with a discussion of her own childhood experiences with a troubled brother, the author draws on sixty in-depth interviews of men and women from diverse backgrounds whose siblings suffer from a range of disabilities. The author notes that "normal children have two life tasks: to recognize the enormous impact of a damaged sibling has on them, and to forge an identity in which that sibling is peripheral. The Normal One provides remarkable insight into this overlooked family bond and empowers siblings to claim a life for their own free from other's expectations, or paralyzing feelings of shame, guilt, and regret.
