Adolescents and Inclusion: Transforming Secondary Schools
Recommended Reading
edited by Anne M. Bauer and Glenda Myree Brown
Baltimore: Paul A. Brookes, 2001
ISBN: 1-55766-515-X
Author Bauer is a professor of Teacher Education and Dr. Brown is an adjunct professor, both at the University of Cincinnati. In the preface to this book they write, "This book is written with the teachers, administrators, and students of Purcell Marian High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is grounded in a two-year action research project in which we observed, interviewed, read, and participated. Through that project, we were able to identify many facets related to teaching in an inclusive high school. We offer no recipes, no simple solutions. We offer what we observed, how it worked, and what teachers, administrators, staff members and students said so you can begin to think about how to make inclusion work for you."
The book reexamines the roles that educators play in creating inclusive learning communities by describing an inclusive high school and examining how to get the most out of such a diverse setting for learning. Major topics include designing and adapting curriculum and instruction, managing behavior, identifying appropriate accommodations and assessments, and collaborating as a team focused on student learning in an inner-city school. Each chapter concludes with a valuable list of resources.
Dealing with one of the most challenging and important school issues today, the book is a valuable aid to educators in the process of transforming schools so all students can be more successful at learning.
