Population Special Educ 504 Title I/LAP ESL 7540 891 62 1093 47 Project Description:
The Project will set up a district wide summer institute on reading instruction for special education students currently in inclusive settings. Representatives from general education, special education, and speech and language pathologists from the preschool program will attend the Institute. Institute participants will be identified by the district's seven elementary schools, three junior high schools, and one high school. Each building will also select 6-8 special education students to focus on during the Institute. Building representatives will spend four days attending inservice presentations. They will then create inclusion programs in reading for their identified special education students. Buildings will establish their own priorities in terms of inservice programs.Challenges:
Challenges include linkage of special education students to the general education curriculum and a disproportionate percentage of special education students failing to meet performance standards.Needs:
There is an identified need for a coordinated, district-wide system change.Strengths of site:
Strengths include strong building approaches and programs in reading, but the district needs the opportunity to coordinate a system-wide change. The local Education Association has signed off on the project and every building site has agreed to participate. Strong leadership in the district has empowered each building to solve problems. Data collection is beginning to answer district questions with strong research-based project to follow. Project will impact not only the K-12 system, but also the Preschool Program.Evaluation:
This is a research-based project with data collection
