Daffodil Valley Elementary: OSPI Inclusion Project Progress Report 2001
Overview:
The nine member team at Daffodil Valley met once a month to collaborate, brainstorm, plan, and share about our efforts to be an inclusive school. This team was made up of four general education teachers, three special education specialist, and our librarian. The last two years we have focused on behavior interventions and family involvement to increase reading and overall success of each of our students.Activities:
Here are some of the activities that we completed:
I .Purchasing many supplemental materials through the grant to support inclusion of lower readers in the classroom
2. Purchasing and implementing 2nd Step, a violence intervention program, to teach students social skills in order to nurture a positive learning environment
3. Purchasing the writing software CoWriter and Write Outlook for our 3rd -6th grades to accommodate those students who have a difficult time with writing, because we strongly believe in the relationship between reading and writing skills
4. Providing further education opportunities through available workshops for paraprofessionals who support our students, specifically in the areas of reading and writing
5. Hosting several video-based discussion groups addressing the tough issues of inclusion
6. Hosting 2 separate academically centered Family Nights to assist our families in working with their children at home on the basic skills of math and reading in a fun and interactive wayResults:
Every single one of our SIP(Sumner Inclusion Project)-targeted students demonstrated academic growth in all areas, including reading. SIP provided much needed support for our staff in collaborating on a regular basis to meet the unique and often complex needs of many of our students. One of the most positive results has been the time we have been able to spend building strong positive relationships with our families based on good communication and a common goal of helping their child succeed.
