Classroom Management That Works: Research-Based Strategies for Every Teacher
Robert J. Marzano with Jana S. Marzano and Debra J. Pickering
ASCD, 2003
ISBN: 0871207931

This useful handbook, follow-up to previously highly recomended What Works in Schools by the same author, is focused on how classroom management affects student achievement. Based on Marzano"s research from more than 100 studies on classroom management, he applies these findings to a series of action steps that educators can use to:

  • get classroom management efforts off to a good start
  • establish effective rules and procedures
  • implement appropriate disciplinary interventions
  • develop a positive "mental set"
  • help students contribute to a positive learning environment, and
  • activate school-wide measures for effective classroom management.

The book is filled with real stories as illustrations of how the action steps can be used successfully in different situations. The authors also review the strengths and weaknesses of different programs with proven track records. This is a superb book on a critically important topic clearly related to the achievement of higher standards in teaching and learning.
