Arts Journal.com   This resource offers links to hundreds of stories itemized by arts "issue." It is a very valuable resource for those looking at the state of the various arts.

Culturelink Network Research Projects   This extensive collection of resources in this Croatia-based site is mostly concerned with cultural policy issues in Europe.

The Social Impact of the Arts Project (SIAP)   From the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work, The Social Impact of the Arts Project is committed to developing methods for studying the role of arts and culture in contemporary American society. It has undertaken a variety of research projects in Philadelphia which examine the relationship of arts and culture to other forms of civic engagement, the connection of regional and neighborhood participation, and the ways in which the arts affect neighborhoods' quality of life. The website offers the full text of a number of studies relating to the development of communities through arts related programs.

Center for Arts and Culture    The Center for Arts and Culture is an independent research organization providing analysis and promoting dialogue on issues affecting our cultural life. The Center gathers and evaluates data, publishes books and reports, and supplies information for all those concerned with art, culture and society. Their collection of bibliographic citations on cultural research and public policy is very extensive. Other vast directories are presented online. A number of their research reports are available for download and provide great ammunition for those interested in building public support for the arts.

The Community Arts Network    The Community Arts Network (CAN) project promotes information exchange, research and critical dialogue within the field of community-based arts, that is, art made as a voice and a force within a specific community of place, spirit or tradition. This website includes research resources and directories, including The Community Arts Training (CAT) Directory - a listing of trainers and training services in community-based artmaking throughout the U.S. This is a very informative website.

Culturework    Billed as "A Periodic Broadside for Arts and Culture Workers", this online publication from the Institute for Community Arts Studies, Arts & Administration Program at the University of Oregon offers a plethora of articles and useful information for online reading.

Feral Arts     Feral Arts has developed its own approach to community cultural development. Working in visual arts, video and new media the organization takes a long term approach to investigating and developing responses to key cultural issues. From 1993 to1998 Feral Arts main focus was the relationship between marginal young people and public places. Outcomes from this body of work (videos, music, reports, publications) were bought together in CD-rom form and analyzed in "They Shoot Ferals Don't They?"

National Arts Journalism Program at Columbia University    The NAJP offers three major studies online: One involves how the arts are reported in US newspapers. This is a very detailed study from 1999. "Television and the Arts" similarly profiles cultural reporting on the major TV networks. "The Architecture Critic" tracks the arena of architectural criticism in American newspapers. All of these studies are fully readable online. This is a great resource and service.

National Campaign for the Arts    British based arts lobbying organization. This website is quite extensive and offers a plethora of research on the economic and social impact on the arts. An excellent advocacy resource.

State of Dance    A compendium of links to stories presented in The Arts Journal over the last several years. Quite a few stories are linked but a number of links are now out of date. This is a depressing read with the financial woes ever present in the dance community.

University of Massachusetts, Arts Extension Service     AES is a national, nonprofit arts service organization, a program. The agency strives to achieve access to and integration of the arts in communities through continuing education for artists, arts organizations and community leaders. The website offers a number of research oriented online resources.

Cultural Economics: Collected Works of Harry Hillman Chartrand    This site includes links to quite a few studies on a variety of related topics.

The Economic Impact of the Arts    This is a web link library leading to all known online studies of the economic impact of the arts. The listing from Arts on the Line is itemized by geographic area.

Americans for the Arts: The YouthARTS Development Project    How U.S. Communities are Using the Arts to Rescue Their Youth and Deter Crime. This is an extensive site covering research, funding of programs, how to get started, and much more.

The Argonaut   Extensive database of resources, documents, and research on the arts, arts advocacy and the role of arts education in improving the lives of our children.

An Arts Across the Curriculum Program    Outline of a program adopted by The Southwest Virginia Community College in Richlands, Virginia designed to foster an active appreciation, awareness, and development of the human potential to better understand our world through the language of the arts.

Arts in Education Research Studies - Arts Education Partnership    This is a VERY valuable site for those interested in seeing strong art education programs in their local schools. Scores of studies and documents are presented. In some cases these are abstracts, but in many or most cases, the full documents are available for free (Thank you AEP). Of course even more access is available for those who choose to join the organization. Great research website.

Arts Assessment of Educational Progress     Since 1969, the National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as "the Nation's Report Card," has assessed the academic performance of fourth, eighth, and twelfth graders in a range of subjects. In 1997, NAEP administered an arts assessment to a national sample of 6,480 students at grade 8. This website offers a plethora of insights into what the assessment discovered as well as offering a nice link library of arts education resources.

Art As Healer "How art therapy helps reach the real kid behind the mask"     Article from The National School Boards Association By Jo Anna Natale. The article offers a case study of how art therapy is used successfully in the public schools.

Arts Integration: Semiotic Transmediation in the Classroom    by J. David Betts, Ph.D., and others. - This study describes two years of research with the Arts Integration Program (AIP) of the Tucson Pima Arts Council, Tucson, AZ. This is an unabridged copy of the study report and not just an excerpt. It is helpful to have such research accessible on the internet.

ARTSEDGE The National Arts and Education Information Network   ARTSEDGE was established and continues its development under a cooperative agreement between the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts (with additional support from the U.S. Department of Education). Great website, chock full of valuable arts education resources

CAIRSS    a bibliographic database of music research literature in music education, music psychology, music therapy, and music medicine. Citations have been taken from 1,354 different journal titles; 18 of which are primary journals, meaning that every article ever to appear is included. This is a valuable research tool.

Champions of Change: The Impact of the Arts on Learning   This extensive report includes a compilation of seven major studies that provide new evidence of enhanced learning and achievement when students are involved in a variety of arts experiences.

The Coming Up Taller Report    Produced by The President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, with Americans for the Arts, describes how local artists and educators help turn around the lives of young people and identifies the common characteristics of effective arts and humanities programs. Program Profiles describe over 200 after-school, weekend and summer programs contained within the Coming Up Taller report. Download the full report.

Eloquent Evidence: Arts at the Core of Learning   Elizabeth Murfee, 1995, President's Committee on The Arts and The Humanities. The entire text of this report is presented online. This is an especially valuable resource for arts advocates.

An Intelligence View of Music Education by Dr. Arthur Harvey, University of Hawaii (Manoa) This 1997 article gives a feeling for the state of the art in research into the link between music and education and intelligence. Many studies are cited.

International Journal of Education and the Arts - Abstracts of Articles This resource includes scores of abstracts of a wide variety of research projects. This is a very valuable resource that also includes information on subscribing to the journal itself.

Music and learning Eight ways to use music for teaching and learning   This is a rather short listing which is nevertheless a useful outline of the ways in which music can be used to enhance the general learning abilities of students.

Music Education National Conference: "Music Education Facts and Figures"     This page makes the case for the value of music education in the schools. Numerous studies are cited specifically.

Gaining the Arts Advantage: Lessons from School Districts That Value Arts Education     The purpose of this study is to identify the conditions and practices that create and sustain district-wide commitment to arts education for all students.

Getty ArtsEdNet    One of the top arts education meta sites on the internet.

How the arts contribute to education, an evaluation of research by Kent Seidel, Ph.D. This is a wonderful overview of a plethora of research indicating the value of the arts as part of the overall education of children. It offers great ammunition to those in support of strong arts education programs in our schools. AAAE members can have further access to the full bibliography of research.

Improving Learning in Schools With Arts Partners in the Community    From the Arts Education Partnership, this collection of research resources is not always easy to navigate but the contents should be informative to those seeking to strengthen arts programs in the schools. About 10 different articles are offered here.

Northwest Education Magazine, Special Issue: Arts Education, Basic to Learning    This special issue offers eleven articles, accessible online, profiling the value of arts education in the schools.

Learning Partnerships The Arts Education Partnership prepared this guide at the request of the U.S. Department of Education and the National Endowment for the Arts. Its purpose is to offer guidance to community leaders from the arts, education, business, civic and government sectors who seek to combine their talents and resources in partnership to address the arts and arts education needs of the young people of their community.

Who's Dancin' Now    This is a wonderful site offered by PBS. It includes a wide array of accessible resources on the role of arts education in society along with resources for citizens wishing to strengthen this role in their own communities.
