Washington: A State of Learning
by Bruce and Linda Campbell
Campbell & Assoc Inc, 2000
ISBN: 0964203715

Bruce and Linda Campbell have written a timely, practical, and informative manual for teachers facing the challenges of the new State standards. The book--first in a series of three--focuses on elementary schools and will be followed by manuals for middle and secondary levels. It includes twelve elementary lessons, with three each in reading, writing, communicating, and math. In each case, the performance tasks described require students to learn and apply their knowledge in real ways that demonstrate not only memorization, but comprehension, and the use of higher order thinking skills.

The book includes as well a brief history of the national and local standards movement, a glossary of terms related to standards-based instruction, test-taking tips, how to align learning with the benchmarks, how to question for thoughtful learning, and how to create a positive classroom environment. Examples of how to apply multiple intelligences strategies make it clear that there are numerous highly motivating and effective ways to assess and guide learning. The strategies suggested can be used by all teachers to reach and teach the diversity of students in every classroom.

Throughout the book, the authors have provided numerous charts, diagrams, and specific examples that teachers will find easy to use, adapt to their students' needs, and that may suggest still other strategies they can develop themselves. This book is one of the best resources we have found for helping elementary schools in the State of Washington to meet and be guided by the new standards.

Bruce Campbell is a teacher in the Marysville School District and Linda Campbell is a Professor in the Graduate Education Programs at Antioch University, Seattle and Director of Antioch's Center for Community and Professional Learning. They are both locally, nationally, and internationally recognized speakers and consultants, and co-authors of Teaching and Learning Through Multiple Intelligences and the new ASCD book Multiple Intelligences and Student Achievement--Success Stories of Six Schools.
