Character Begins at Home: Family Tools for Teaching Character and Value
Karen D. Olsen and Sue Pearson
Books for Educators, 2000

This is another great handbook for effective parenting. Author Karen Olsen has created a "toolbox" of useful skills with many opportunities for practice and activities. She suggests that parents do these in partnership with their children, and use them also as entry points for meaningful discussions.

Five "lifelong guidelines" head the list: trustworthiness, truthfulness, active listening, no put-downs, and personal best. Each of these is discussed in a chapter filled with ways to develop the ability or trait. The book also includes chapters on caring, common sense, cooperation, courage, curiosity, effort, flexibility, friendship, initiative, integrity, organization, patience, perseverance, pride, problem solving, resourcefulness, responsibility and sense of humor. Needless to say, the author suggests turning to appropriate sections of the book for strategies to deal with challenges in parenting as they come up.

This clearly is also a very useful book for teachers at all levels.
