Technology and Education Without Barriers:
A Profile of the Latino Technology Foundation
by Scott Larson
Headquartered in southern California, the Latino Technology Foundation (LTF) provides computer training, seminars, scholarships and community programs aimed specifically at the Latino population. With over 35 million people of Latino and Hispanic descent in the United States, LTF believes a large population is significantly underserved, particularly in the fields of technology and new media. LTF has a clearly defined vision and mission. From adolescents and teenagers to young adults and senior citizens, LTF focuses on improving lives through education and technology combined.
The Latino workforce is integral to the American economy, especially as this workforce continues to grow. Here are some important facts to consider:
The Latino population is the largest minority population in the United States, with an annual growth rate of over ten percent (10%).[1] Latinos are the fastest growing ethnicity and demographic in today's American workforce.[2] Latinos comprise a significantly less percentage of positions and careers in the technology sector relative to other minority populations in the United States.[3] Contributions (local and federal) in 2001 to organizations supporting Latino communities equaled less than two percent (2%) of all monies contributed to nonprofit organizations in the United States.[4]Given the size and growth rate of the Latino population in the United States, these are critical issues that need to be addressed in both the private and public sectors. The Latino Technology Foundation believes that bringing technology and education to Latino communities is essential. The uniqueness of the Latino Technology Foundation lies specifically in the foundation's well-defined objectives. LTF's goal is to create a path of opportunity for Latino communities to see not only the near-term benefits of technology and education, but also long-term career opportunities in the technology sector.LTF sponsors classes and training at a variety of levels. With classes offered on a weekly basis, LTF supports courses in the following fields:
Basic Computer Skills (the "How To" for Beginners) Introduction to Windows (E-mail/Outlook; Microsoft Word; Excel; PowerPoint) Microsoft QuickBooks & Small Business Solutions C++ Programming (and other computer programming protocols and applications)Classes are offered in both English and Spanish, enabling Latinos of different educational backgrounds and aptitudes to participate.
LTF is establishing alliances with two-year and four-year accredited colleges and universities to provide grants and scholarships to Latinos. Contributions to LTF will support the establishment of grants and scholarships for Latino students in the fields of information technology.
Fields and degree programs represented by LTF grants and scholarships include:
Computer Science Education in Technology Electrical Engineering Entrepreneurship in Technology Information Technology (IT) New MediaLTF also believes community programs promoting computer seminars and training in technology are important and effective. Sponsorships, career fairs and events in Latino communities will increase awareness and provide an open environment for Latinos of all ages to learn more about opportunities in the field of technology.
Initially the LTF community programs will occur in targeted Latino communities in the United States. LTF aims to sponsor these community programs on a quarterly basis.
Instead of focusing solely on training, or scholarships, or even internship placements, the Latino Technology Foundation is integrating all of these benefits to create a comprehensive path for Latinos to learn more about education and careers in technology. By establishing, as well as tapping into an extensive network of resources in the business technology arena, LTF believes these objectives are quite attainable.
Currently LTF is forming alliances with technology companies, Fortune 500 corporations, academic institutions and other nonprofit organizations. On a weekly basis, LTF receives inquiries from dozens of corporations, schools and community organizations interested in working with LTF.
LTF welcomes discussions with all entities interested in working with LTF to implement the foundation's strategies and achieve key milestones. To inquire about strategic alliances with LTF, please contact the Latino Technology Foundation.
