Mindful Learning: 101 Proven Strategies for Student and Teacher Success
by Linda Campbell

Corwin Press, 2003
ISBN 0-7619-4572-5

This new book is a critically important source of information for all teachers who are focused on helping their students to reach higher academic standards and thrive while doing so. Linda Campbell has been a "Teacher of the Year," has taught on all levels in both public and independent schools, and is currently a professor of education at Antioch University Seattle. She has focused her book on answering a question that is foremost in the minds of many teachers: "How can I make my teaching more effective?"

Built around three broad topics--prior knowledge, affective learning, and student diversity, the book explains specific, well-researched strategies that have been proved to be successful. These strategies have been drawn from (1) instructional processes used by high performing teachers and high performing schools, (2) research metaanalysis of instructional techniques, and (3) research studies.

Each chapter begins with a brief review of the literature and rationale for inclusion, and each concludes with a comprehensive bibliography for more in-depth study. All of the strategies are clearly explained and illustrated. This is a comprehensive, easy to use manual for teachers at all levels, and is an outstanding contribution to the field of education. Herein lie many of the answers to today's dilemma of how to "bridge the achievement gap."
