In the Shadow of Excellence:
Recovering a Vision of Education Appropriate for All
by Gregory J. Fritzberg
Caddo Gap Press, 1999
ISBN 1-880192-30-6

Gregory Fritzberg is a former teacher at a public alternative high school and Assistant Professor of Education at Whitworth College. The author's vision that guides his book concerns "the equality of opportunity, the idea that all children deserve an equal start in the race for educational, occupational, and economic rewards." He asks, "How might educational excellence and equality of opportunity be reconciled in a more legitimate manner than it has been in the past?"

The book begins with a discussion of recent neglect of equality of opportunity in education policy, and discusses the victims of inequality. Subsequent chapters deal with opportunity as a moral ideal, new opportunities to learn provided in current educational policy, and recommendations for substantive change. This is a timely book for policy-makers and those involved in educational change as the author suggests how educational systems might expand educational opportunity for all students, and in the process be more supportive of genuine academic merit.
