It is difficult to find resources on service-learning as well as reading materials for teens' core-curriculum literacy classes. This book is a resource for both. The readings are inspiring and thought provoking, and much more interesting than materials frequently used to improve reading skills. Every section ends with an idea that could lead the reader into service learning. The stories included highly motivating as students read about teen-agers like themselves and what they have been able to accomplish.

The accompanying Teachers' Guide includes complete, easy-to-use materials for coaching service-learning projects that work. It includes a discussion of what makes for good service learning projects and the seven steps to a successful project: choosing the problem, researching it, deciding on a project that addresses the problem, creating a vision of the results you want, making a plan, taking action, reflecting, celebrating and beginning again. The guide also discusses skill-building materials including fundraising, speaking in public, teamwork, writing press releases, giving and interview, and creating a budget.

These are two excellent resources for middle school and high school teachers who are interested in helping their students to develop empathy and high ethics and behavior as they learn traditional subjects.
