Developing Minds: A Resource Book for Teaching Thinking- Third Edition
e
dited by Arthur L. Costa
ASCD, 2001
ISBN:0871203790

Arthur Costa introduces his comprehensive book on the development of thinking skills as follows:

"This book is intended for educators who believe that education is one of the most powerful mechanisms for developing intellectual prowess; that meaningful interaction with adults, peers, and the environment is essential in mediating the learner's intellectual development; that learning is a continual transformation of inner perceptions, knowledge, and experiences; and that all human beings have the potential to continually develop their intellectual powers throughout their lives. It is intended to help educational leaders, teachers, administrators, curriculum workers, staff developers, and teacher educators‹infuse curriculum, instruction, and school organization with practices that more fully develop the intellectual potentials of all the organizations' inhabitants."

Since the first edition of Developing Minds came out in 1984 numerous new programs and teaching strategies have been developed; furthermore, we can observe escalating interest and application of ways to develop thinking skills and intelligence in classrooms throughout the world. This is due in no small part to Dr. Costa's pioneering efforts.

This new, nearly 600 page edition includes chapters by the foremost researchers and practitioners in the field. The book is divided into five broad themes: learning to think, thinking to learn, thinking together, thinking about our own thoughtfulness, and thinking big. It reviews the history of the thinking skills movement, describes ways to develop thinking skills in almost any setting, gives examples of how to integrate the processes in curriculum, explains specific techniques and strategies, gives examples of how technology can be utilized, and describes successful (and inappropriate) ways to assess thinking skills and intelligence. And more!

While the book is copyrighted, readers are invited to duplicate excerpts for distribution to community groups, schools staffs, and boards of education. These materials must of course give credit to authors and the book. This will be an invaluable resource for all those interested in helping students to move beyond memorization of facts and skills to problem-solving, decision-making, and other higher order thinking processes.
