Awakening Genius
by Tom Armstrong
Alexandria, VA: ASCD, 1998
ISBN: 0-87120-302-2

Dr. Tom Armstrong, well-known author of eight books on learning, former classroom teacher and special educational consultant, has written another book of great value to educators at all levels. At the heart of this practical guide is his suggestion that "the most powerful way to awaken genius in the classroom has nothing at all to do with lesson plans, classroom environment, learning materials, or instructional time. It has to do with you. And not you as an educator, but you as a human being. If you wish to spark the hidden light of genius that lives in every one of your students, you must first find and (re)light that spark in yourself." He follows this suggestion with a number of ways to do so.

He believes that curiosity, an open mind, and a passion for learning must be alive in every teacher if students are to develop those capacities. In his book, Armstrong describes the qualities of genius and their theoretical foundations. He also warns us about what can shut down genius in the home, school, and through the media. The book is filled with thought-provoking questions, suggested activities, books, tapes, and ways to engage students in awakening their own sometimes sleeping genius.
