Learning to Lead: A Workbook on Becoming a Leader
by Warren Bennis and Joan Goldsmith
Boulder, CO: Perseus Books, 1997
ISBN: 0-201-31140-2

This practical and inspiring workbook is about how leaders are made, not born. Author Warren Bennis is Distinguished Professor of Business Administration at the University of Southern California and Joan Goldsmith is a management consultant and formerly on the faculty of Harvard Graduate School of Education. The authors believe that "honest, capable, ethical leadership is possible for all of us."

They note that "If we do not see any need to change the world or improve the quality of our lives, we will not be motivated to become leaders. If we do not make the process enjoyable, we will not improve the quality of our lives. For this reason the observations, anecdotes, and exercises in this workbook are written to focus on both large and small problems, and at the same time enable you to enjoy transforming yourself into a more effective leader."

As they consider the characteristics of leadership the authors note that successful organizations must have a common vision, empowerment for all involved, and a learning, inquiry-based, reflective culture. The book offers tools needed to lead such an organization. This is not only a personal guide but a superb tool for study groups of school administrators, teachers, school boards, students, and parent groups.
