Leading With Soul: An Uncommon Journey of Spirit
by Lee G. Bolman and Terrence E. Deal
San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass, 1995
ISBN: 0787955477

Lee Bolman holds the Marion Bloch Chair in Leadership at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and Terrence Deal is Professor of Education and Human Development at Vanderbilt Peabody College. Both are highly respected, worldwide consultants on leadership and organizational development. Their book is organized around conversations between a beleaguered leader and a wise sage, resulting in a meaningful story. They note that "in matters of ethics and spirit there is nothing more practical than a good fable."

In their introduction, the authors present the theme of their book: "To capture spirit, we need to relearn how to lead with soul. How to breathe new zest and buoyancy into life. How to reinvigorate the family as a sanctuary where people can grow, develop, and find love. How to infuse the workplace with vigor and elán. Leading with soul returns us to ancient spiritual basics—reclaiming the enduring human capacity that gives our lives passion and purpose."

This is an inspiring, sensitively written book that raises the level of dialogue about leadership that is built on love, compassion, justice, and spirit. At a time when most educational leaders are experiencing unprecedented stress, this book provides a welcome, renewing oasis.
