The Disciplined Mind: What All Students Should Understand
by Howard Gardner
Simon and Schuster, 1999
ISBN: 0-684-84324-2

Another seminal book by Howard Gardner, author of numerous books including Frames of Mind and Multiple Intelligences, comes at a critical time in the history of education. As long-range decisions are now being made that will set the course for the future, he examines the role of education, forces that will remake schools, new perspectives from cognitive and neuroscientific research, differences in how cultures educate, educating for understanding (instead of "mindless" memorizing), the roles and integration of various disciplines, integrating the theory of multiple intelligences into the curriculum, working with new standards, and suggestions for the future. From our perspective, this is a "must read" for educational decision-makers as well as their students.

The Disciplined Mind sets forth Gardner's evolving educational philosophy in a way that makes sense in this confusing time, and many of us continue to be grateful for his insights and guidance.
