Leadership Capacity for Lasting School Improvement
by Linda Lambert
ASCD, July 2003
ISBN: 0-87120-778-8Linda Lambert is founder of the Center for Educational Leadership at California State University, Hayward. Following her 1998 book, Building Leadership Capacity in Schools, she visited educators throughout the world to see how they were applying the ideas in her book. In Leadership Capacity for Lasting School Improvement, she summarizes many of her findings.
In this book the author outlines five major prerequisites for high leadership capacity:
• Inquiry-based use of data to inform decisions and practice
• Broad involvement and collective responsibility for student learning
• Reflective practice that leads to innovation
• High or steadily improving student achievementLambert uses numerous real-life examples as she suggests how principals, teachers, parents, and students can become effective leaders. In the Foreword, Ann Lieberman notes that "Viewing leadership as primarily in the service of developing a healthy organization, we learn that learning and leading are intricately tied, and that we can all become leaders as well as teachers."
Another excellent resource for study groups, this book is filled with guidelines, tools, reflective questions, and activities.
