Hooray for Diffendoofer Day!
by Dr. Seuss, with some help from Jack Prelutsky and Lane Smith
Alfred A. Knopf, 1998
ISBN: 0679890084What fun! Fans of Dr. Seuss will love this book published posthumously and based on the sketches and jingles he created for a proposed book on education. Not surprisingly, he had in mind the celebration of individuality and creative thinking. When his editor was sent the raw materials, she asked children's poet Jack Prelutsky and illustrator Lane Smith to finish what Dr. Seuss had started.
Especially timely today, the story is about a very different kind of school--the Diffendoofer School where teachers and students thrive on a remarkable curriculum. One day the principal announces that:
"All schools for miles and miles around,
Must take a special test,
To see who's learning such and such
To see which school's the best.
If our small school does not do well,
Then it will be torn down,
And you will have to go to school
In dreary Flobbertown."
What happens then is Seuss at his gribbulous, grobbulous best! We know you'll enjoy sharing this tale about this diffendooferous school.
